LAND FOR PEACE OR PEACE FOR PEACE

Exactly 20 years ago, Rosh HaShana eve, about 11:30 pm. I was downstairs at Beit Hadassah, near the museum, taking a look at emergency supplies with my friend Uri Karzen, when it started. Massive shooting. Unlike anything we’d heard before.
Little did we know that this was the beginning of what’d we’d predicted all along, that is, the Oslo war, otherwise known as the 2nd intifada, which continued for over 2 years. And countless deaths.

Declaration of War

Declaration of WarOctober 1, 1998 The Arabs have, officially, declared war on The Jewish Community of Hebron. This is, of course, not a secret. We have been talking about it for well over 10 years, since the outbreak of the Intifada. Then, we were ignored. Unfortunately, we are still being ignored. One month ago an Arab terrorist climbed in through […]

Returning

ReturningErev Yom Kippur 5759September 29, 1998 What is more appropriate to write about on the eve of the Day of Atonement than Tshuva – which literally means ‘returning.’ Of course there are many-faceted aspects of tshuva. Perhaps it begins with that of an individual, and his yearning to better his ways, while making up for the wrongs committed. There is […]

A New Year in Hebron

A New Year in HebronSeptember 17, 1998 This New Year is going to be very special for me and my family. For the last 17 years we lived in Kiryat Arba. Moving to Kiryat Arba was one of the best decisions my wife and I ever made. Arriving 2 weeks before the birth of our second child, we never regretted bringing […]

Masada

According to the ‘Hebron Accords,” one of Israel’s obligations is the further arming of Arafat’s army. The weapon chosen to distribute to the terrorists is called the ‘mini-Ingrim.’ This gun is similar to the Israeli Uzi, except that it is deadlier. It shoots more bullets faster than the Uzi. It shoots single rounds, and is also automatic, like a machine gun. […]

The Bastardization of Netanyahu

A frequent topic of discussion lately, especially among visitors speaking with us in Hebron, is the following question: Are we better off bringing down the government and suffering a possible return of the left, led by Sarid, Balin etc.; or, should we suffer Netanyahu’s continued rule, come what may, because we don’t have any choice? The two sides of the […]

Happy Endings

I have received a number of responses to my last article, “May 10, 1999.” Those responses relate to the “overly optimistic” conclusion of the essay. Therefore, I would like to clarify: The article was written as a result of questions put to me relatively frequently in Hebron, by tourists and journalists alike. I suppose others also pose the question to themselves, […]
