LAND FOR PEACE OR PEACE FOR PEACE

Exactly 20 years ago, Rosh HaShana eve, about 11:30 pm. I was downstairs at Beit Hadassah, near the museum, taking a look at emergency supplies with my friend Uri Karzen, when it started. Massive shooting. Unlike anything we’d heard before.
Little did we know that this was the beginning of what’d we’d predicted all along, that is, the Oslo war, otherwise known as the 2nd intifada, which continued for over 2 years. And countless deaths.

Following on the same Path

Following on the same Path April 18, 2005 Shalom. In a few days we will all be celebrating the holiday of liberation and redemption, the conclusion of Israel’s exile in Egypt. The Passover holiday is a really bright star on the Jewish calendar. It represents the end of our cold winter and the commencement of spring and summer, bringing with […]

The Real Tel Aviv

The Real Tel Aviv April 10, 2005   Shalom. The year was 1979. Ten women and forty children had recently moved into the basement floor of Beit Hadassah in Hebron, and set up house, as best as possible. Sort of like an urban kibbutz. A large eating area and several rooms for the mothers and their children. Swings hanging between […]

Chop off their tongues?

Chop off their tongues? April 3, 2005 Shalom. I was aghast, reading an article titled “Disengagement and Halacha” by Eitan Kastner. [http://www.yucommentator.com/news/2005/03/29/News/Disengagement.And.Halacha-900453.shtml– username: dwilder; password: eretz]  Posted a few days ago, this article summarizes a program recently held in New York, concerning the current ‘disengagement’ and its status in Jewish law (Halacha in Hebrew). Sponsored by the Yeshiva University Israel […]

Simcha and Emunah

Simcha and Emunah March 28, 2005 Shalom. Today I have to speak about two different subjects, which definitely have a common denominator.   Exactly a week ago I was in New York, together with my friends Simcha Hochbaum, Noam Arnon and Rabbi Hillel Horowitz. We all flew in to the ‘big apple’ for a wonderful occasion. A few months ago, […]

Talia Sasson is a Spy

Talia Sasson is a Spy March 14, 2005 Shalom. These days, with everything that’s going on, it’s not too difficult to get discouraged. Actually, it’s fairly easy. But, just like anything else, in the end, it’s not always the way it looks, rather it’s the way you look at it. For instance, I heard a story last week that can […]

Green light to terror

Green light to terror March 7, 2005 Shalom. This morning it happened again. I had sat down to work at about 8:30. Only a few minutes later the beeper started buzzing: “Shots heard near Ma’arat HaMachpela. There are wounded.” Grabbing my camera case and ID permits, I ran from the Avraham Avinu neighborhood to the Ma’ara, about 3 minutes away. […]

Super Whores

Super Whores February 27, 2005 Shalom. Well, I guess Friday night’s terror attack was only a chance happening and the victims, merely poor sacrifices for peace. Try explaining that to Yael Orbach’s fiancé, who expected to marry his beloved in a few weeks. I guess he was lucky. He was only critically wounded. She was killed. And when making the […]

Self-hating Horror

Self-hating Horror February 18, 2005 Shalom. Holding the position I do in Hebron grants me the dubious honor of receiving and reading various works of dribble written about those of us living in the city of Abraham. I find all sorts of garbage on various web sites circulating throughout the internet universe. A few days ago I received another such article, […]

The Eleventh Commandment

The Eleventh Commandment January 31, 2005 Last night some 200,000 people stood in the streets between the Knesset and the Prime Minister’s office, ostensibly demanding either elections or a national referendum as a prerequisite to implementation of Sharon’s expulsion policy. “Let the nation decide!” In all actuality though, the mass gathering screamed to the heavens: please – stop this madness. […]

Weapons-confiscation is only the beginning

Weapons-confiscation is only the beginning January 24, 2005 There are those who believe that we are paranoid. How could we possibly suspect the Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, or any of his underlings, of attempting to diminish our security? Rubbish! Well, last Thursday, the civilian head of Hebron’s security apparatus, Yoni Bleichbard, who is EMPLOYED by the Defense Ministry, […]
